Happy New Year All, I am looking to do an oil change in the coming weeks and thought about using an engine flush. I am looking at using either Castrol Classic or Duckhams 20/50 oil. I would appreciate your thoughts on whether to use a flush or not as I have heard mixed opinions, some saying it may cause more issues than it solves. Also, does anyone have any opinion on oil brand? I have previously used Fuchs but thought I might try another to see if it makes any difference to the oil pressure. Cheers Phil

Hi Phil, my view on engine flushing is that if you have an old engine of unknown history, it used to be the thing to do. The negatives associated were that it would remove build up that was sealing up potential leaks. If your engine is known good, has had regular oil changes, then I would not worry about doing it...but also, if it’s had regular oil changes, it should do no harm either. As far as oils, I’d be looking at standard viscosity and something synthetic or semi synthetic. As long as it’s from a well known brand, I would not be overly concerned about the brand. I have run royal purple in the V8, but last change was Amsoil. Standard spec was 10w50 I think...but something with added zinc is good, as oils back in the day used to have this and new oils tend not to....not many new engines run flat tappet cams these days! I’d look at adding a zinc additive if your engine oil doesn’t have it.
