My RS3100 has orange needle dash and clock. A friend pointed out that my Tacho has a "red zone" where the last numbers arre written in red. His does not have a red zone. Has my (or his) tach been swapped over for something else?

I remember something about certain 3100's having red needles and some white but not sure about why and how many... certainly never heard of a red zone...

I remember something similar and it was along the lines that Ford were short of the dials with white needles so used whatever was on the shelf.
Ford did the same with gear lever knowbs, using what was available in the parts bin which is why some have the plastic gear knob and others the leather.
My car has inertia belts from new while others have static, again a case of what was available in the parts bin at the time.

Hi all, I have seen rev counters with the "red zone" but mainly 4 cyl ones for some reason probably because there were a lot more of them than 6 cyl models however they have generally been on early facelift models. I have never seen one fitted to a RS3100, when new the red needles would have been the first to be used in general as they were obviously a current item (as used in the GT and GXL models) the white needles would be the later item as used in the Mk2 range of cars, both would have been readily available as the MK2 launch was just around the corner. There is still a chance JR that your car had that item fitted from new, when grabbing these components out of the parts bin no one would have noticed and certainly would not have cared as long as it was a V6 item and worked. I have also heard of an RS3100 fitted with hazard warning lights from new. RScapriman

I seem to remember we had a chat about this at one of the RS coombe days. Don't the red needle dials read to a higher MPH Vs the white needle dials? I guess the red needle cars are faster then!

Yes Vernon, the numbers with white needles will read 10,30,50 etc whilst the red will read 20,40,60 and so on but the thread was about the rev counter have a "red zone" at the end of it and I personally have never seen an RS3100 with one of these fitted nor in fact did any of the GXL's that I have owned allthough as I stated before most I have seen were on early 4 cyl facelifts. Interestingly the German sales brochure for the facelift range shows both GXL and RS2600 with the "red zone" on the rev counters would not be surprised if the English ones did as well however there are several items on the cars used for these shots that are not entirely accurate. Hi all, the German built GXL I recently sold had red needles and the rev counter had a "red zone" starting at approx 5700 rpm. Magnar

Hi John, no numbers were red only the needles and as I stated earlier red needles went in 20,40,60 up to 140. White needles 10,30,50 up to 130 but there was a mark after the 130 also indicating 140. Len

Just to confuse things further, WGW has the 130mph speedo, but with red needles, and no red band on the tacho. I've no reason to believe these aren't the original dials. It also has inertia belts front and rear, and non-opening rear quarters, which ideally I'd like to replace with opening ones.

Hi Mike, is there any chance you could post a pic of your dashboard. Len.

Hi Mike, you have to watch those rear opening quarters. They have a nasty habit of falling off! The north American cars, I believe, had the catch fixings that went through the glass Vs the UK ones that had the 'Glue and prey' catches. By the way, this thread is about Rev counters. I've already been warned about this , so just watch yourself. I'd like to state for the record that my rev counter does not have a red zone (there, keeps the tread on track ;D). Post a pic of your dashboard by all means, but if you can confine this to the rev counter, or at least mention the rev counter, all will be cool! ;D ;D ;D

Len, your a star, can I have a copy of that? ;D I think that could make a great opening to any speech I give. I have to do some training in Poland next week, so what better to open my presentation with than these photo's. People will be so impressed, I think I'll be able to just sign a few autographs and go home! You are right about the stiff competition at the AVO club. Gareth arrived with his infamous windscreen wipers on at full pelt. I'm sure the competition couldn't have been stiffer, but I kept my nerve until the very end. I get the feeling that by the end of the day, the competition just couldn't keep it up. Now about thos petunias. well composted garden waste or Horse sh...manure? ;D
