Just to add to this, I sent these snaps to Len because the forum had been so deathly quiet and I thought a bit of colour would cheer it up.
I've got cherished plates on many of my cars and vans, most of which have been taken from coaches that have come into stock over the years, such as 563 UM which has been on my daily hack for many a year.
I'd been loosely keeping an eye out for a 31 plate for WGW, but what few existed seemed to be up around the £4-5k mark which I certainly wasn't going to pay. 31 SPA would have been ideal (!) but 31 BAD had come up for grabs and was gradually dropping in price. Quite a nice plate for an RS I thought. But then out of the blue came SXF 31, and at the absoloute bargain price of £650. So, SXF - Sexy Ford maybe? Well, whatever, I snapped it up.
At around the same time I discovered that my 2.8i had carried a cherished plate from an early age, and when this was taken off and it reverted to X-reg it did not get its original plate back but a North London one instead. As the glass was still etched with South-West London plate BGH 98X, and it had been delievered new by Currie Motors, Kingston for whom I actually worked from 1986 for five years, there was an extra incentive to try to persuade my LVLO to put it back to its 1/8/81 registration.
So a visit to Wimbledon saw me come away with WGW now SXF 31, but also YLW as BGH. And what's more, they didn't even charge me for doing the 2.8i. Amazing!
And talking of amazing, when Len emailed me the other night on the subject of early 2.8i's, having looked up the details of the Cobalt Blue one he'd owned many years back, PPR 444W (W-reg 2.8i's were a real rarity by the way), the chassis number was GAECBR 01463. So I looked mine up. 01461. Just two away. How spooky is that!
So there we go. You can all stop snoring now!

Nice one Mike, you were soooo lucky not to be charged for the 2.8i transfer DVLA are not renowned for giving anything away in fact they are also not that helpfull as John with PHD 802M (as was) will tell you, he went down the same route as you with regard to getting the original Reg No back on the car (he knew it was still available) but not so simple for him. Yes that was very strange that the 2 cars were seperated by a single Chassis Number and assuming that the first 2.8i's were sold old the 1/7/81 mine must have been one of the earliest cars on the road first registered 10/7/81, wonder what the earliest Chassis Number was? Nice 2.8i Mike! Looks like a rare unmolested car with pepperpots! Is that your house in the background of the picture of the rear of the car?

The 2.8i is pretty bog-standard in appearance, only the flared outlets for the obligatory Janspeed stainless exhaust system looking fractionally more meaty. It's had its fair share of paint, but then it's not a low-mileage car and it has just turned 30 - same as me in fact... Oh, and the previous owner had the seats beautifully, and correctly retrimmed, the only downside being that the new foam in the base squabs isn't quite as firm as I'd like. The car's certainly not concours, but it'll more than hold its head up in most company. It gets nothing like the attention that the RS does though.
And no, that's Katie's gardening shed! My house is 1860's (mostly), diagonally behind where I took the photo's from, and guarded by Basil, a particularly hostile 87/D registered Green-Wing Macaw who's really a Rottweiler with feathers! He's lived with me since he was an infant, and the whole village gets to hear him on a daily basis. But then both the Capri's, the Stag and the RS6 Plus (number 300) all make plenty of noise. Which is why none of my neighbours talk to me! Oh, and then I sometimes bring buses home too...

Very nice Mike. I think the exhausts look fine. standard 2.8i ones look like pea shooters or something off a 2cv!
If I had all those cars, I think I'd be consigned to the gardening shed (must get a bigger one, just in case!) or the garage! One of my neighbours talk to me..coincidentally Basil, a retired gent, but my other neighbours don't say a word..probably because we objected to a huge extension. I don't think the cars help though!

I see that the neighbours not talking to you isn't just an Aussie thing. i have 6 of them, but only talk to 2. I think thats because 1 is an editor of a hot rod mag, and other is away from the shed, and doesn't here anything. If its not the cars making noise, its the 2 ridgebacks barking if anything goes near the shed if its not me.
