Hi guys, so, getting my engine together and thinking about the water pump and thermostat housing and inlet manifold. I'm assuming these were black from the factory....more so with the inlet and thermostat housing, but not so sure about the water pump. Can anyone confirm?!?!?

Before my battery exploded seven years ago, there were remnants of black paint. In addition when I met the guy who wrote a book on Averly at one of the AVO National Days, he said that when he wrote the assembly procedure for our cars, the valve rocker covers were covered with a 'shield' and the whole engine was sprayed black.

Thanks Gareth. Did they included the alternator? Think I'll do the bracket black and leave the alternator natural!

Hi Vernon, the complete engine block was black and was sprayed in one piece but I dont think alternator was fitted or carb and possibly not starter motor but water pump was, even so most people leave these as some contrast as with alternator bracket. RScapriman.

My research which included consulting Len helped me reach the conclusion the alternator and bracket should be base metal colour. The pulley and the fan for the alternator could be black or yellow passivate as this has been the colour of the NOS items I've purchased in the past. Water pump was black. Carb isn't painted but part of the starter is as shown in my picture.

Thanks Len and Gareth! Well, I'm back to doing the one step forward, two steps back. Just checking the alternator bracket will bolt on correctly and the hole just above the exhaust port on number one cylinder has a snapped bolt in it! Drilling and trying to extract has not budged it! I'm not sure I can accurately enough drill and tap it again, so I'll probably swap the heads around, as the other head is fine...and I suspect running the alternator at the back of the block won't work! Wish I had bloody noticed this before! I do, however, have the paint needed for my various black bits and I have dropped off my original manifold, alternator bracket and fan pulley to be blast cleaned by TSR vapour blasting services. At last one place in my own town that I can use the services, rather than being hours away from me, so I dropped off my parts on my way to sainsbury's. I had a very nice chat with the owner who works from home and has all the facilities in a small unit at the bottom of his garden! He has business from around the world, which is pretty impressive, so a good guy/company to know. so a small update. I've blasted these parts at home and so some will be painted, so plated. The fan pulley is a NOS item, so may go on, but the paint isn't perfect...we'll see. and my sump all bolted on...looks almost as nice upside down! Upside down, you can see a lot of bits that will need to be painted, so once the heads are swapped, I'll do this before putting it in!

While it's upside down or down side up, you paint the sump bolts ;-)

If I were you Gareth I would think very carefully before writing comments like that lol, and in my opinion I like the contrast of the plated bolts !!!! ultimately Vernon the choice is yours and I'm sure it will be a stunning car just a shame about the colour. RScapriman

So do I Len........Gareth has now earned the honorary title of nmw3 you know.......he painted his bolts so they wouldn't show the dirt. I'm not sure if he painted his nuts or not....and I don't plan to check!
Ah, you'll learn to love the colour. You do get used to the acceleration you know.....

Reckon your right about the colour, its getting close to nmw assessment time there is a possibility with comments like Gareth made he could make NMW 1 lol.

You know Gareth now has a vehicle of the constabulary.....it's all falling into place now.....he's going to officially be looking at non concourse compliance. Clearly vying for that nmw1 position!

I blame Rik Wood, he painted everything black. So for contrast I plated the screws for the valve covers when I put the original covers back that Stuart painted.
Careful Vernon, I might just leave the RS at home and bring the enforcer down to Combe ;-)
