Outer Drop Glass Rubber

After spending the past few years trying to find a rubber for the outside of the front window, at last I have found one that I am happy with.

I know Vernon had replaced the rubbers on his car and was never satisfied with the result despite purchasing the rubbers from a reputable source.

Below is a slection of pictures showing the fit of the old rubbers which I believe to be the originals:




I had a spare set of chrome trim to show the profile of the rubber, the one on the left is what I took off my car and the one on the right is from a spare set of trim.



and this is the profile of the new rubber.




The edge that pushes in to the trim chanel is about 1mm narrower, but all I did once the old rubber was removed (I did this without the need to remove the chrome trim) was to use my fingers and pinch the channel to make it narrower (obviously with the window fully wound down) before pushing the new rubber in place. The important thing is the part you see is the same width as the original and provides a tight seal against the glass and is very firmly located in place within the trim.

Good post Gareth, very informative. I've found that the repro's can sometimes be a bit, well, err 'limp' and they don't stay firmly on the glass. Everyone knows there's nothing worse than a limp rubber, so are these ones stiff?

Not as stiff as the old ones but as you know rubber hardens with age ;D

They are soft but with enough firmness to press snugly against the glass. I would say comparable with the rubbers on my Skoda which is actually an Audi item!

They come slightly oversize so you can trim the length perfectly, so I can send you down one of the off-cuts.
