these are going through the roof. I checked to see one sold last night from germany for £700.00. Yes, that was one unit, not a pair!

I tell you, I almost fell out of my Stannah Stairlift when I saw what that light unit made. Anyway, I'm going to make a start at dismantling my car tomorrow and expect to be able to retire in approximately a fortnight, and drop you a line from Monaco. MN

You used the safety belt! Good man! I remember seeing an err 'custom' capri that 'featured' 4 of these light units on the back. I was tinking at the time 'that could be expensive if he gets rear ended!'. Darin, £800 with 7 days to go! wow. Whats the betting these top £1500?!?!?!?

This prompted me to follow up some leads from when I spoke to insurers at the Classic Car Show that was at the NEC in November along with the fact that a friend had some Escort wings stolen from his lock-up while he was at a car show. The insurers wouldn't pay for the parts as they weren't declared on a policy and he didn't have a receipt. Admitedly things from ebay paid via paypal do have a receipt but what about those parts from the autojumble?
All insurers I spoke to said they would insure parts while a car is under going restoration which required the car to be in a state of disassembly and not on the road. None could define as to what level of disassembly a car would have to be in for parts to be covered and if it would include the parts that came off the car along with new parts purchased to go on the car as a replacement.
Hagerty however have a policy that covers Goods in Storage and we have agreed a value for the parts that I have and the premium.
In response to Lens article in the RSOC Club magazine I was going to write a short article to go into this in more detail.

I think that would be a worth while article, Gareth. I'm guessing we all have some parts that we would have serious problems replacing if they went missing, but I think we are going to have a hard time convincing insurers the value of the parts. As we all know, insuring parts for what we paid may not cover the cost of replacements....if you could source them. I have a spotless set of new rear light to go on my car. I paid a fraction of what these are going for now, but if I wanted to replace them I'd have to pay the going rate I guess. Along with insurance, security will have to play an increasingly important part. I think an article would benefit all RS car owners, so good idea, Gareth!

You raise some points I raised with the insurers and lights for example have been insured (we agreed the value) between the price a pair of lights sold and a single unit. So if a pair went for £1200 and a single went for £700, we calculated the upper price for a pair would be £1400. So the price agreed is between the two.
We know prices will always go up and down, so the agreed value for my parts is just a snap shot of their worth which we will review come renewal time. I can update the list anytime in the policy year if their are significant changes bit as with any policy changes may be incurred, but hopefully my article will adress all these issue.
The lights sold, recently, were they just the lens unit or did they include the metal brackets at the bac, bulb holders and plastic cover?

In view of this business about parts and panel values, I've bought some 12'' metal punches, and using a club hammer, have stamped my initials on all the panels and parts.
To be honest, it has made a bit of a mess of the car, and it didn't work at all well on the glass and lights. But hey, at least I'll know the parts are mine if they get stolen and then turn up on ebay.

PS. Vernon, I have the letters B, K, O and N if you want to borrow them. ;D

Good Move, Mike. I like it. You clearly rate portection above aesthetics, so good on ya! I don't fancy marking all my parts with 'BONK' ;D but do you happen to have just two letters, a 'T' and a 'I'? ;D
